Hotrod Golgotha.Book #1 in the new “Non-Precious Poetry Series” explores the transcendental art of the Gearhead.
It’s not often that a little book of poems receives praise from both a Poet Laureate AND a senior editor at Hot Rod Magazine, but W. Joe Hoppe’sHotrod Golgotha has done just that.
Carrie Fountain, 2019 Poet Laureate of Texas, writes that “Joe Hoppe’s poems have their roots in the poetry of the beats and fly with the wings like those of a hood ornament on one of the big old cars about which he rhapsodizes in Hotrod Golgotha.”
Phillip Thomas, former Senior Staff Editor at HOT ROD Magazine, adds that; “If you were to take apart Joe Hoppe’s mind like a carburetor, you’d find its parts layered throughout in the pages of Hotrod Golgotha; each piece feels familiar, even if your weekends aren’t centered around gears and grease.”
W. Joe, who teaches English and Creative Writing at Austin Community College in Austin, TX, writes poems that are simultaneously accessible and esoteric-- cool, Zen pools reflecting a blue-collar aesthetic. His attention to detail shows in both his poetry and his cars; He has been working on his ’51 Plymouth with the goal of driving it from one end of Route 66 to the other since 2012. He hopes to fulfill that goal in the summer of 2021.
Hoppe has had two full-length books of poetry published: "Galvanized" from Dalton Publishing in 2007 and "Diamond Plate" from OBSOLETE! Press in 2012. His second outing with OBSOLETE! marks the end of a 2-year hiatus for publisher and printer Rich Dana, who provided the book design and hand-printed cover art.
